PLD prepares survey to help it choose its presidential candidate

Charlie Mariotti, secretary general of the Dominican Liberation Party (PLD), the largest opposition party, gathered the pre-candidates for the presidential candidacy in the May 2024 general elections for lunch on 26 September 2022. The PLD is for the first time in the opposition after being government from 2004 through 2020. The party has organized an electronic survey to choose “the presidential candidate with the most support.” The activity is set for 16 October 2022 at polling stations nationwide.

The Central Committee of the PLD recognizes six pre-candidates. These are: former Vice President and First Lady Margarita Cedeño, Former president of the Chamber of Deputies and Mayor of Santiago Abel Martínez, former Attorney General and Minister of Environment Francisco Domínguez Brito. Also the lesser known, former PLD deputy Karen Ricardo and former Minister of Labor Maritza Hernández and Luis de León, president of the Fuerza Boschita political movement.

As of electoral rules in place, the past two winning candidates for the former ruling party will not be running for the Dominican Liberation Party (PLD). Former President Danilo Medina (2012-2016 and 2016-2020) is outlawed by the 2015 Constitution from running for a third term. Yet former President Leonel Fernandez, who was a pre-candidate for the PLD into the 2020 presidential election, has left the party and is expected to be the presidential candidate for the PLD dissident party, the Fuerza del Pueblo (FP).

Participation in the PLD survey on 16 October 2022 is open to all that are eligible to vote in the Dominican Republic. People can vote at the voting stations where they are assigned to vote as per their voting cards (cedulas). Party membership is not a requirement to vote in the survey.
