Using Israeli hydroponics technology, more agribusinesses are cultiating fresh produce for local and export sales.
The production method does not require soil. Nutrients are added to water and these feed the production of lettuce, bok choy, cauliflower, basil, leek and more.
Daniel Biran, ambassador of Israel in the Dominican Republic, told El Dia reporters that the technique is not new but now is making a comeback because of its advantages over traditional farming. Biran highlighted crops are ready faster. Every 28 days the plants are harvested.
One hydroponics farmer, Jorge Peña Rodríguez, owner of the JR greenhouse, explains he produces 550,000 lettuces each month, translating into an average of RD$6.5 million, as reported in El Dia.
