Record arrivals in September, despite Fiona

Despite Hurricane Fiona, the DR had its best September ever in terms of tourist arrivals with more than 400 thousand tourists, reports the Ministry of Tourism. The Ministry says that 430,129 tourists arrived in September. This is 106,467 more than in the same month of pre-pandemic 2019.

Tourism Minister David Collado reports that in the January-September 2022 period the sector generated more than US$6 billion. He estimates foreign exchange earnings to exceed US$8.4 billion by the end of the year.

“It is something extraordinary, reaching record figures after being impacted by a storm. This shows the strength and resilience of our tourism”, said Collado making the announcement during the month statistics briefing on 4 October 2022.

He also highlighted that in the January-September period of this year, 5, 334,291 visitors arrived, some 346,596 tourists more than the 4,987,698 of the same period of 2019.

Meanwhile, hotel occupancy at the general level was 61% for the month of September, with a housing availability of 91%. Collado says that hotel occupancy is affected by the large number of rental units available nationwide that are not accounted for in official statistics.

In the cruise sector, 50,423 cruise passengers arrived in September 2022, with Puerto Plata being the destination with the highest number of arrivals with the Amber Cove port at 28,439, Taino Bay at 16,028, La Romana at 4,019 and Sans Souci at 1,939 travelers.
