Vice President named head of Electricity Cabinet

President Luis Abinader has named Vice President Raquel Peña president of the Electricity Cabinet. From the start of his administration, President Abinader has sent the Vice President to coordinate the most difficult government departments until the flow of activities within these is resumed. Peña oversaw the Health Cabinet during the difficult times of Covid-19. She later was sent to the Ministry of Environment after the murder of the minister reportedly for not acceding to permits.

There is a lot of noise in the electricity sector. As a token of topics making headlines, there is the recent fire at a Gazcue electricity substation. The Presidency reported on 11 October 2022 that power has been restored to 80% of the affected circuits. Ede Este reports that the fire began at 5:15 pm on Monday, 10 October 2022 and was caused by a short circuit. A resident in the area says that for years they have requested the substation be relocated.

Another hot topic in the electric sector is that of the installation of a major power barge in Azua. Environmentalists say it will be very damaging to tourism development in the area.

Vice President Peña was named by Decree 594-22. She replaces Lisandro Macarrulla, the electricity cabinet head (Decree 530-20). The same Decree 530-20 establishes that Celso Marranzini Perez is the honorary executive director of the Electricity Cabinet.

The Minister of Public Health, Daniel Enrique de Jesús Rivera Reyes is named president of the Health Cabinet.
