El Pais, the leading Spanish newspaper, reports that 55-year old Javier Segura, one of Catalonia’s most feared drug traffickers, was arrested at a resort in the Dominican Republic and extradited to Spain. He had been on the run for seven years ago after the Spanish Supreme Court ruled on his conviction for stealing 200 kilos of cocaine from a container in the port of Barcelona.
On 17 April 2022, after intense police, judicial and diplomatic pressure, Segura was arrested at a resort in the Dominican Republic, El Pais reports. At the time of the arrest, Segura was driving a Maserati, valued at more than EUR100,000, with which he had gone to pick up his 14-year old son at the Punta Cana International Airport.
Segura is now in prison in Spain, sentenced to serve 12.5 years.
The story was not known in the Dominican Republic until El Pais covered the arrrest.
