The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs has released a 17 October 2022 update on the Humanitarian Situation and Cholera Report in Haiti (#4). It states that one of every two persons in Haiti goes hungry.
The report indicates that most cholera cases are concentrated in the Ouest Department, where Port-au-Prince is located. Center, Artibonite and Nippes departments have also reported suspected cases, but these are much less. There have been 78 confirmed cases and 835 suspected cases, as of the 17 October 2022 bulletin.
The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights has denounced the alarming increase in the use of sexual violence by armed gangs, especially in the Port-au-Prince metropolitan area.
As the blockade of the Varreux fuel terminal continues, significant operational challenges persist for relief partners continue to coordinate efforts to assist the most vulnerable. The most vulnerable neighborhoods are subject to the influence of armed gangs, most of whom are located in the Port-au-Prince metropolitan area. The devastating impact of fuel restrictions on medical facilities and health care workers continues to prevent services from being provided as before.
Meanwhile, Canada and the United States have shipped the first security equipment, including tactical and armoured vehicles and supplies to the Haitian National Police to control the gangs.
