Government picks up the tab on tourist hospital bills in Bavaro bus accident

Tourism Minister David Collado said the Dominican government is assisting the victims of the tragic traffic accident on 6 October 2022 that ended with five tourists dead and dozens of others injured.

Interviewed by the press during the opening of the National Hotel & Tourism Association (Asonahores) Trade Show in Punta Cana, Collado said the government is covering the bills of the bus accident victims and the cost of air ambulances to send the injured back to their countries. He said the government is also assisting with the rescheduling of tickets for those who recover and return to their countries. He said 15% of the 51 bus accident victims are still hospitalized here.

“I give faithful testimony that the Dominican state has assumed responsibilities that should, perhaps, have been assumed by the Tourism Cluster and the tour company that organized the trip,” he said. In his statement, Collado did not attribute responsibility to the bus company. State prosecutors have only yet pressed charges against the driver of the bus.
