Minister of Interior & Police Jesus (Chu) Vasquez told the press that the role of his ministry is to carry out the plans for citizen security and safety, not to implement these. The implementation of these is strictly up to the National Police, he said on 19 October 2022 when responding to press inquiries regarding new cases of crimes especially in northern Santo Domingo.
“We designed the citizen security policy, now, the execution of the policy, because I am not a general of the Police, is the responsibility of the one who executes the policy in matters of citizen security,” he told reporters.
It is recalled that on 9 May 2022, Vásquez Martínez had previously said he could speak for the Police. At the time, he had explained that the National Police, the Migration Agency and the National Institute of Migration were under the umbrella of the Ministry of Interior & Police. He had given this explanation when the press asked why Major General Eduardo Alberto Then, executive director of the National Police, was not present to speak for national security when meeting with the Permanent Committee of Interior and Police at the Chamber of Deputies.
This time, on 19 October 2022, when speaking to the press, Vasquez directed the press to make their inquiries to the Police.
