A new hike in electricity tariffs expected in 2023

Energy and Mines Minister Antonio Almonte told reporters a new hike in electricity prices will need to come in 2023 as the country deals with the rises in imported fuels. The Dominican government has been absorbing most of the rises in fuel so as not to stimulate local inflation.

Almonte stressed that the Dominican Republic imports natural gas, oil and coal to generate electricity. Natural gas has suffered significant hikes in cost.

The good news is that the country continues to diversify its energy matrix with more renewable energies being installed.

The breakdown of energy sources in the country as of July 2022 serving the National Interconnected Energy System (SENI) is: natural gas (40%), coal (30%), petrol (14%), water (6%), eolic (6%), solar (3%) and biomass (1%).
