City government tackles garbage in Isabela and Ozama rivers

National District Mayor Carolina Mejia met with dozens of community garbage collecting groups working in the areas off the banks of the Isabela and Ozama river to tackle the problem of garbage in the area.

The groups are asking for a 40% increase in the price of a ton of refuse to avoid more contamination of the two rivers that divide the National District from eastern Santo Domingo.

Mejia said that if the garbage-collecting groups in 20 barrios continue to work together with the director of the municipality’s Department of Cleanliness, she would certainly go to bat with the government and get the additional money. She says the groups have already cleared up some 500 garbage dumps in these barrios.

She also noted that some 5,000 young people have been trained in various aspects to protect the environment, recycling, plumbing, and electricity, and they would be on the frontline in the barrios in their work to clean up the two rivers.
