First cholera case in La Altagracia recovers

Minister for Public Health Daniel Rivera reported that the first confirmed case of cholera in the Dominican Republic after the September 2022 outbreak in Haiti was located in the province of La Altagracia. A 32-year old Haitian woman who had arrived from Port-au-Prince, Haiti some two weeks ago brought the disease with her. The Ministry of Public Health says the case was suspected a day after the woman’s entry, through efforts of the National Epidemiologic Watch System (Sinave). The Ministry of Public Health cholera protocol was put into effect immediately.

The woman received medical care at the Nuestra Señora de la Altagracia public hospital in Higuey, capital of La Altagracia province. Tests done on her six-month old baby and on her husband were negative. Her symptoms are under control. She received dialysis treatment to assist in her regaining kidney function.

Haiti is currently experiencing an outbreak of cholera with more than 130 reported cases and nearly 40 fatalities have been reported by UN sources.
