Government moves to offer free school transport

The Presidency decreed a major nationwide program to provide free transport to school children nationwide. Spokesman of the Presidency, Homero Figueroa announced on 23 October 2022 that the Ministry of Education is in charge of the National School Mobility System with the goal of eventually reaching the full private and public school enrollment nationwide. The program seeks to ensure that public school students get to school and return home safe and sound.

Government statistics indicate that the student enrollment in public, private and mixed schools is 2,627,833 in 10,797 educational centers for the 2022-2023 school year that began on 21 September 2022.

The government spokesman said the program will be unfolded gradually to eventually reach all students.

The Presidency has yet to upload the decree calling for the program to its website.

The Ministry of Education is under an overhaul with the change of ministers in August 2022. Diario Libre features an extensive interview with the new minister Angel Hernandez on findings of major irregularities under former Minister Roberto Furcal.
