Anti-corruption chief prosecutor, Wilson Camacho went public about threats from relatives of former President Danilo Medina who face serious charges of corruption in the judiciary. Camacho said that during the Friday, 21 October 2022 hearing of the Operation Anti-Octupus, Carmen Magalys Medina Sánchez exhibited threatening behavior against the prosecutors. Previously, her brother, Juan Alexis, had openly threatened the prosecutors for pressing charges against them for corruption. The brother and sister are accused of key roles in the dismantled network and corruption case known as Operation Anti-Octopus (Operacion Anti-Pulpo). Juan Alexis and Carmen Magalys are brothers and sisters of former President Danilo Medina. Other close family members are also mentioned in the long files of corruption cases now being heard in the judiciary.
In a press release issued by the Attorney General Office on Monday, 24 October 2022, the Public Prosecutor’s Office states:
“In this process the accused Juan Alexis Medina Sanchez and the accused Carmen Magalys Medina Sanchez have had some behaviors tending to threaten the Public Ministry, to generate pressure,” maintained Wilson Camacho, head of the Specialized Prosecutor’s Office for the Prosecution of Administrative Corruption (Pepca).
“We have warned the court that if this is repeated, we will act accordingly. So far we have not done so assuming that this could be part of the heat of the situation, but in the event that in the future any action is taken that may seem threatening to public officials in the exercise of their function when presenting the accusations, we will act accordingly,” he emphasized.
He said the prosecutors will not be intimidated. “We are aware that the excesses of courage are only solved with more excesses of courage and that the dignified attitude of a Public Prosecutor’s Officer that is attacked is to be more of a prosecutor, and we will act accordingly,” he said.
Regarding the threat of the accused, he said “that, on one occasion, and this could be seen by everyone, in the preventive custody hearing, Juan Alexis Medina Sánchez made blatant statements with threatening content.
Camacho said now Carmen Magalys Medina Sanchez made threatening comments during the hearing last Friday, 21 October 2022, and that is why the Public Prosecutor’s Office is issuing the warning to the court, as revealed in the press release published on the Attorney General Office website.
“We are officials in the exercise of our role and nothing and no one will stop us or weaken us in the exercise of our role,” he said.
