Diario Libre has published insights and a drawing for the Manzanillo Port and Industrial Project on the northwestern-most point of the country. The United States Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) carried out the first draft in coordination with the Alexandria, Virginia-based US architecture and engineering firm, Alliance WSP Joint Venture.
The Master Plan looks into the impact of unprecedented fast construction on the population of 9,772 persons living in the city of Pepillo Salcedo, according to the 2020.
The Manzanillo Port is included in the National Budget 2022 with RD$2.8 billion for improving the port and connecting roads. Currently, the port is used to export 60% of the Dominican bananas. The port is also used for imports of clinker and coal.
The feature in Diario Libre observes the environmental challenges ahead. The port is surrounded by Dajabón River, the natural border with Haiti and the Laguna Saladilla Wild Life Refuge to the West. To the East, is the National Mangrove Park Estero Balsa. The master plan includes a shipyard whose location has been contested by the people, who say it would damage one of the most popular beaches.
