The Compañía Lírica Nacional presents Italian Gaetano Donizetti’s Rita (Deux hommes et une femme), a comedy making light of domestic violence. The Santo Domingo performances will be in Spanish on Friday, 4 November and Saturday, 5 November 2022 and Sunday, 6 November at the Manuel Rueda Hall of the National Music Conservatory, Av. Cesar Nicolas Penson. Tickets are RD$100.
Rita is a one-act comedy written originally in French. It premiered in Paris in 1860 at the Opera-Comique, 19 years after it had been written by Donizetti.
The characters are the shrewish, self-satisfied Rita, an inn landlady, who, believing her abusive first husband Gasparo has died, is determined that in her second marriage she will be the abuser of Pepe, her second husband.
It is then known that her first husband did not die in the shipwreck, as supposed. He, on the other hand, believes his wife has died in a town fire and returns for her death certificate so he can remarry.
His return empowers Rita’s second husband Pepe to seek a way out from his wife’s violence. The men scheme to leave the other with Rita. She, in turn, tries to avoid ending up with no husband at all.
The showings are Friday, 4 and Saturday 5 November at 8pm and Sunday, 6 November at 6pm. Ondina Matos is the director. The performers are:
Rita: Paola González and Antonia Chabebe, soprano
Pepe: Otilio Castro and Modesto Acosta, tenor
Gaspar: Eduardo Mejía, baritone
Special guest performance by Gilberto Hernandez of the Compañía Nacional de Teatro.
