The very heavy rains that have come with a passing large tropical disturbance have caused problems for travelers in the municipality of Higuey. The bridge that connects La Otra Banda with El Salado on the old road to Veron (Punta Cana) and Nisibon was severely damaged to the point of collapse. Several municipal districts, such as La Ceiba have been cut off.
This bridge is used by buses that transport Punta Cana resort workers. The bridge itself was built back in the days of the Trujillo dictatorship and split in half as a result of the raging waters caused by the recent rains. A sinkhole also appeared in the road that connects La Otra Banda and Higuey. La Otra Banda was the main connection to the East, until the Autopista del Coral was built.
