Pedernales in 35 minutes for US$50

The Public-Private Alliance, the Pro-Pedernales Trust, and the Civil Aviation Board (JAC) announced late last week the start of regular flights from Santo Domingo’s La Isabela International Airport to the improved Alcoa airstrip in Pedernales.

The airline Air Century, via an alliance with Republic-Air, will offer this service for US$50.00 for each 35-minute flight to and from. From Santo Domingo, by car, the trip usually takes over five hours with no traffic and stopping.

Flights start on Tuesday, 1 November 2022, and will be twice a week – on Mondays and Fridays.

The flights are provided now that dozens of executives are traveling to work in the Pedernales area that is marked for major hotel and cruise ship tourism development. The flights seek to facilitate development actions in the southwestern province. Tourists can now take advantage and book flights, too.

The Abinader Administration last week also inaugurated a new heliport in the Barahona area, an hour and a half drive north of Pedernales. The heliport is located on the Malecon of Barahona and had a cost of RD$26 million. President Abinader was in the Barahona-Pedernales area last week for several activities.

Those traveling to Barahona or Pedernales by plane or helicopter, need to make arrangements ahead for their transportation as the distances are long and winding in the Deep South.
