Dominican Liberation Party (PLD) legislators celebrate the victory of Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva in Brazil. The victory of Lula gives them hope the former ruling party and party leaders Danilo Medina (2012-2016 and 2016-2020) and Leonel Fernandez (1996-2000, 2004-2008, 2008-2012) will return to power again.
Lula Da Silva is known for the Odebrecht corruption era in Brazil. Nevertheless, reports are that the people in the rural areas voted in his favor to displace rightwing incumbent Jair Bolsanaro who had the vote of those living in the cities.
Former President Danilo Medina’s campaign manager was Joao Santana, who set up the bribes office in the Presidential Palace, and later had to abruptly return to Brazil where he served a jail sentence for corruption.
PLD deputy for San Cristobal, Tulio Jimenez, said that after Lula da Silva was imprisoned, taken to jail and discredited as a corrupt person on Sunday, 31 October 2022 Brazil announced he is the President-elect. The legislator said a repeat of this situation could happen in the elections in the Dominican Republic in 2024.
Close relatives of former President Danilo Medina and high-ranking officers in his government face charges of major corruption in the Dominican judiciary.
