Customs announces Christmas tax break

The director of the Customs Agency (DGA), Eduardo Sanz Lovatón announced that for all the month of December 2022 and for the first 15 days of January 2023, Dominicans living abroad will be able to bring duty free articles that do not exceed US$4,000.

Dominicans living abroad or the consignees of the shipments, must bring in the goods as personal luggage. The DGA also allows for the goods to be shipped in. In this case, the Dominican expat must go personally to the corresponding customs administrations (colecturías) with their passport, purchase invoices, boarding pass and other documents proving that their entry into the country occurred within the Christmas grace period. To receive the import duty exemption, the person needs to have not traveled to the country for at least six months.

Only one grace is applied per family. The import duty cannot be applied to motor vehicles of any kind, firearms, industrial goods, or agricultural raw material, including fuels and by-products.
