Political parties committed to comply with electoral laws

Will political parties abide with the electoral law and lower the intensity of the presidential campaign preparations or will Dominicans be subject to a very long presidential campaign?

The Central Electoral Board (JCE) and the leading political parties on Thursday, 3 November 2022 signed an agreement where political parties agreed to comply with the law regarding the 2024 presidential election. The official campaign does not open until July 2023, but several political parties are getting a head start in positioning their political candidates.

The letter of commitment signed on Thursday, 3 November is but a rehashing of what electoral laws already call for. This means rallies, caravanning, marches, concentrations of people meeting in public places for open campaigning for a candidate are banned. Likewise, billboards on political pre-candidates are all banned until the official campaign opens.

The president of the Central Electoral Board (JCE), Román Jáquez Liranzo announced on Thursday, 3 November 2022 that the institution and the majority of the political parties signed the “agreement-compromise” with the objective of stopping untimely proselytism.

The political parties and movements that signed the pact for electoral integrity were the following: Partido Revolucionario Moderno (PRM), Partido de la Liberación Dominicana (PLD), Fuerza del Pueblo, Partido Revolucionario Dominicano (PRD), Partido Reformista Social Cristiano (PRSC), Alianza País, Partido Dominicanos por el Cambio (DxC), Partido de Unidad Nacional (PUN), Partido Bloque Institucional Social Demócrata (BIS), Partido Humanista Dominicano (PHD), Partido Cívico Renovador, Partido Revolucionario Social Demócrata, Partido MODA.

Also the political parties Frente Amplio, Partido Alianza por la Democracia, Partido País Posible, Partido Liberal Reformista, Partido Quisqueyano Demócrata Cristiano, Partido Unión Demócrata Cristiana, Partido de Acción Liberal (PAL), Fuerza Nacional Progresista, Partido Demócrata Popular, Partido Nacional Voluntad Ciudadana, Partido Verde Dominicano, Movimiento Patria para Todos, Generación de Seguidores, Partido Opción Democrática, Movimiento Comunitario Nosotros pa’ Cuando and Movimiento Independiente del Municipio de Consuelo also signed.

The Alliance for Democracy Party (APD) did not sign the agreement as it considered that this would create a disastrous precedent for the application of the electoral laws in the country.

JCE’s Jáquez Liranzo called the pact historic from the point of view of civic and democratic commitment.

Now the top three political contenders are known – President Luis Abinader (PRM), Santiago Mayor Abel Martinez (PLD), Leonel Fernandez (Fuerza del Pueblo). Over the weekend, the president of the Dominican Revolutionary Party (PRD), Miguel Vargas Maldonado announced he would seek the PRD presidency. These four political parties have received billions in funding from the Central Electoral Board.
