The Turkish power barge Karadeniz Powership has left Dominican coastal waters for Cuba, according to a report in Diario Libre. Environmentalists and community activists in the province of Azua had protested that the ship connect to the national power grid from the Puerto Viejo dock in Azua.
Diario Libre reports that Carlos Matamoros, representative of the company in the Dominican Republic, said the company met with local opposition to connect to the transmission line despite having all the permits. He said that the population has not allowed the completing of the connections. He said the ship will be sent to Cuba as efforts continue to get the final permits. The company won a tender to install 178 megawatts pending environmental clearance.
