President Luis Abinader seeks to help property owners to deal with squatters, especially Haitians, who have been increasingly illegally occupying properties. The President announced a new government unit to deal with squatters taking over either private or government properties. The unit is in charge of processing these individuals and in applicable cases, deporting these.
The new ruling says that anyone so charged and convicted will no longer be eligible for any type of visa to legally enter the Dominican Republic.
Recent reports of entire buildings being occupied by Haitian immigrants are said to be behind the issuing of Decree 668-22 which calls for the creating of a Unidad Especializada de la Policia Nacional for this purpose. The decree calls for the Ministry of the Interior and the Police, the Ministry of Foreign Relations and the Migration Agency to create a specialized unit of the National Police that will prevent and prosecute squatters of any private or public property. The Ministry of Foreign Relations is instructed to notify foreign missions of the decree and how it could affect their nationals.
