Team DR defeats Argentina and Venezuela in FIBA World Cup Qualifier

The Dominican national basketball team scored important wins this weekend as it strives to compete in the 2023 FIBA World Cup. In the game played on Thursday, 10 November 2022 against Argentina, the DR defeated the South American team 80-69 at the Palacio de los Deportes in the Juan Pablo Duarte Olympic Center, Santo Domingo.

On Sunday, 13 November, Team DR then went against Venezuela, also at the Palacio de los Deportes. Team DR won 72-68 thanks to the stellar performance of Jean Montero in the fourth quarter. Montero scored 22 points, including several three-point shots that made the difference. Venezuela had won the first quarter (20-17), the DR then took the second quarter (18-17), with the third quarter going to Venezuela (19-12).

In the Americas Qualifier for the FIBA World Cup, Team DR plays in Group E with six qualifiers (windows). Window 5 ended this weekend with a three-way tie for Argentina, Dominican Republic and Venezuela at 7-3. Based on current tiebreakers, Argentina is in fourth place in the group, behind both Dominican Republic and Venezuela. Still, Argentina is expected to eventually qualify for the World Cup in the next and final window. In Group E, Canada has already qualified for the World Cup competition.

The DR will play Panama and Argentina in the sixth window in February 2022. Argentina did not send its full team to the qualifier in Santo Domingo, but is likely to do so to the sixth qualifier in February.

Teams from the Americas are competing in six tournament windows over 15 months. The sixth and final qualifier will be 23 February 2023 through 1 March 2023, with national sides playing home and away games in each of the event’s windows.

At the end of the next six games per team, the top three teams in each group, plus the best fourth team, will qualify for the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023.

Seven countries from the Americas will earn a spot to compete at the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023. For the first time in its history, the World Cup will be hosted by multiple nations, the Philippines, Japan, and Indonesia, from 25 August to 10 September 2023.
