The Dominican Republic is the Latin American and Caribbean (LAC) country with the highest growth in passenger traffic in 2022, according to the Latin American and Caribbean Air Transport Association (ALTA).
According to ALTA, three countries in the region continue to stand out and continue to follow the growth path in terms of international passengers. These countries are the Dominican Republic, Mexico and Colombia.
In September 2022, the Dominican Republic saw a growth of 124% compared to the same month of 2019, Mexico 114% and Colombia 113%. On the other hand, Brazil, Chile, Argentina and Peru have yet to reach their 2019 levels.
The president of the Civil Aviation Board of the Dominican Republic (JAC), José Marte Piantini remarks the top position of the country “is proof of the work being done by the Dominican Government to make the country a safe destination for the thousands of travelers who have preferred us since we reopened by lifting the absolute confinement to which Covid-19 forced for several months.”
JAC stats show that 1,092,946 travelers — 542,291 arrivals and 550,655 departures – visited in October. The travelers arrived on 8,759 flights. This is a 26% increase over 2019 and 15% over 2021.
In October 2022, there were 140,000 more travelers visiting, compared to October 2021.
In the first 10 months of 2022, 12,801,967 passengers have been transported to and from Dominican territory. This is a record number of passengers for the first 10 months of the year.
ALTA reports that in September 2022 for the first time the Latin America and Caribbean region reached the same number of passengers in a month as in pre-pandemic 2019 and even surpassed it by 1.2%, being the first region in the world to achieve this milestone.
Latin America and the Caribbean’s overall increase of 1.2 % places it as the first region in the world to grow steadily.
“Specifically, 28.6 million passengers were carried in LAC in September 2022. North America, as the second region with the strongest recovery, ranks with 96% compared to September 2019, Africa and the Middle East both with 93% and Southeast Asia with 75% of its 2019 levels, the region that is moving slowest towards recovery,” ALTA points out.
According to the Latin American and Caribbean Air Transport Association, during September 2022, 28.6 million passengers were transported in this region, an amount that places it as number one in recovery.
