The Superintendency of Insurance announced that the government will assist owners of cars that were damaged during the flash floods on Friday, 4 November 2022 in Greater Santo Domingo with up to RD$100,000 in payments per vehicle.
Administrative Minister of the Presidency José Ignacio Paliza, the Superintendent of Insurance Josefa Castillo Rodríguez and Hugo Beras, director of the National Institute of Transit and Transportation (Intrant) announced a program to help the owners of vehicles owners that only had basic insurance coverage.
During a press conference on 15 November 2022 at the Superintendence of Insurance, they explained the mechanism that would help motor vehicle owners that had suffered losses and major damages in the floods in Greater Santo Domingo.
The program “Compensation and Assistance to Owners of Insured Vehicles affected by flooding in the National District and surrounding areas” seeks to compensate damages and/or losses caused to motor vehicles due to the flooding, to those persons who only had contracted a mandatory insurance policy (legal insurance) and to those insured with their own damage coverage (full insurance) that did not include comprehensive risks (damages due to natural phenomena).
Those interested in qualifying for the assistance must bring the documentation to the Superintendency of Insurance in person or upload the documents to the superseguros.gob.do website.
The Superintendency of Insurance said that persons who have not contracted any type of insurance for motor vehicles and those who, even if they have insurance, suffered damages on dates other than 4 November of this year, are not eligible for this program.
Josefa Castillo said that President Luis Abinader had requested the creating of the program in response to his concern for persons suffering major damages during the flash flood of Friday, 4 November 2022 when more rain fell in Santo Domingo in three hours than in 24 hours during category 3 Hurricane Georges.
