The Ministry of Public Health confirmed two cases of cholera in a Dominican 30-year old mother and six-year-old daughter in the slum area of La Zurza, National District. Previous cases had been reported in Haitian immigrants.
The patient and her daughter presented symptoms such as watery and whitish diarrhea, vomiting and dry mouth. The persons received medical care on Sunday, 4 December. The patients were immediately hydrated and stabilized, and samples were taken for coprological tests, obtaining positive results for cholera on Tuesday morning. The patients have recovered but remained hospitalized for observation purposes. They are expected to be discharged on Wednesday, 7 December. Contact tracing was carried out in the area of La Zurza, but other persons with symptoms of the disease were not found.
The Ministry of Public Health maintains permanent surveillance throughout the border area of the country, where there are currently no patients affected by the disease after the outbreak in Haiti. Haiti reports at least 14,000 cases. In the Dominican Republic there have been three cases reported.
