A mentally-deranged person is the lead suspect of dropping a large stone that killed a man who drove his vehicle under the pedestrian pass of Maximo Gómez and Av. 27 de Febrero in the capital city.
The Police says it is monitoring the surveillance cameras in the area to get to the suspect.
The large object hit the front window of the vehicle driven by 29-year old Joel Rafael Cabrera Espino, causing his death by a blunt force trauma. Cabrera Espino was driving a black Kia vehicle, license plate A860749 and was on his way home after a Christmas celebration with fellow telecom company workers.
After receiving the impact through the vehicle’s front window, the driver (now deceased) stopped about 100 meters later in front of the Juan Pablo Duarte Olympic Center.
After committing the crime, the unidentified man was said to have left on foot along the 27 de Febrero Avenue in direction towards Tiradentes Avenue. The Police seek to find a video that can better identify the face of the individual.
Spokesman for the Police Diego Pesqueira indicated that in the case of the person being mentally deranged, the law enforcement institution will fulfill its role of detaining him, but that it will be the professionals in human conduct who will be responsible for deciding if he will be sent to prison.
Pesqueira said that so far more than ten people are being investigated. The surveillance cameras of the businesses near where the incident occurred are being reviewed to be able to better identify the individual.
Relatives of the deceased man urge the authorities to act promptly to avoid another person being injured.
Claribel Espino, mother of the victim, detailed that her son was on his way to his home in Herrera after going out with friends early Sunday morning.
Although the Police said that they have no more reports of this type of incident, a man who was driving along Av. John F. Kennedy on Sunday, 11 December 2022 in the evening, said he was the target of a similar attack, but was fortunate because only the front window of his vehicle was also impacted.
