Cholera strains in Isabela river

The Ministry of Public Health confirms four more cases of cholera in males of 50, 30, 23 and 4 years of age, all Dominicans resident in the La Zurza slum area that is bordered by the Isabela River in northern Santo Domingo.

The individuals were hospitalized on Thursday, 15 December 2022 after presenting symptoms of watery diarrhea accompanied by vomiting and dry mouth, the Ministry of Public Health reports. At the public health center they were hydrated and stabilized. Stool samples were taken with positive results for cholera notified on Saturday, 17 December 2022.

The Ministry of Public Health says the individuals are stable, in good spirits and have an appetite. They are kept in the hospital for observation purposes.

The Deputy Ministry of Collective Health and the Risk Management and Epidemiology Agency at the Ministry of Public Health say staff is closely monitoring the affected’s relatives and friends to detect, prevent and investigate more cases of the disease in the risk areas of La Zurza.

In the most recent study last Friday, 16 December 2022 of water samples taken at different points of the La Isabela River, the presence of the bacterium Vibrio cholerae was found.

The authorities of the Ministry of Public Health urge the population not to be alarmed, to remain attentive to reports and follow preventive measures. The disease can be prevented with frequent hand washing, washing food properly, eating well cooked food, drinking only potable water. Those suffering from diarrhea should to to the nearest health center for investigation and timely treatment.
