Deputy Jose Horacio Rodríguez (Opción Democrática) said that the migration chaos will not be corrected until there is the political will to end corruption in the border provinces. Legislators and municipal officials have denounced graft on behalf of the military and consular officers in charge of the border area, with no known actions yet taken to control the situation.
“The migratory chaos in the Dominican Republic is a consequence of the irresponsible governments that have been incapable of defining and applying responsible migratory policies, putting first the national interest,” said Rodríguez. He said the issue has been handled with populist actions and the increase in deportations is not a solution to the problem while the government continues to issue thousands of visas and corruption at the border continues.
He called for a long-term vision to solve the migration issues with Haiti.
