Senators vote yes to amend Electoral Regime Law 15-19

With 20 votes in favor and zero against, the Senate approved on Tuesday, 20 December 2022 the second reading on the bill that modifies Electoral Regime Law 15-19.

The bill, which was declared of urgency, regulates and establishes the scope of action for the Central Electoral Board (JCE), the government entity in charge of organizing general elections. The amendments incorporate the experiences of the 2020 general elections. The bill regulates the electing of the President and Vice President, legislators and municipal officers.

The approved bill with modifications has 325 articles. It will now be forwarded to the Chamber of Deputies.

The Central Electoral Board urges its approval now that 2023 is a pre-electoral year. Presidential and legislative elections will be on 19 May 2024, municipal elections on 18 February 2024.
