US-DR relations: When will the DR get a US ambassador

Since political-appointee Robin Bernstein packed her bags to leave in January 2021, the Dominican Republic has not had a resident US ambassador. The Dominican ambassador in Washington, D.C. is Sonia Guzman, appointed with the change of government in August 2020.

The United States id the Dominican Republic’s leading trading partner, source of tourists and remittances from the large Dominican expat community. New York City is regarded as the second largest city in Dominican population.

Meanwhile, the US Senate recently issued Resolution 472. The US Senate explains that the resolution reaffirms the Senate’s commitment to strengthening the historic partnership between the United States and the Dominican Republic based on shared democratic values and efforts to advance economic prosperity and national security.

In its explanations, the Senate states: “The resolution encourages continued actions by the government of the Dominican Republic to assume a regional leadership role in promoting human rights, democratic values, and humanitarian assistance.

“The resolution calls for further steps to strengthen cooperation between the governments of the United States and the Dominican Republic on issues of shared strategic interest, including post-Covid-19 economic recovery, nearshoring initiatives in the Caribbean Basin, collaborative efforts to mitigate and adapt to the effects of climate change, and promote stability in Haiti.

“Finally, this resolution calls on the Department of State and the US Agency for International Development to continue to support the efforts of the government of the Dominican Republic to respond to the humanitarian needs of Haitian migrants in the Dominican Republic.”
