The Estrellas Orientales surprised all and the San Pedro de Macorís-based team is now seen as a strong contender for the pennant this year. The team had barely made the 4-team regular season cut off for the round-robin phase of the Dominican Winter Professional Baseball Championship.
The Estrellas defeated the Gigantes del Cibao 4-2 to spend the holidays at the top of the standings of the four-team round-robin when the Dominican Professional Baseball League (Lidom) took its customary break so players could celebrate Christmas.
Play resumes on Tuesday, 27 December 2022 in Santo Domingo’s Estadio Quisqueya with the Tigres de Licey going against the Gigantes del Cibao and the Estrellas Orientales traveling to Santiago to play the Aguilas Cibaeñas in the Estadio Cibao. The teams will play until Friday, 30 December and then take another break before resuming play on Monday, 2 January 2023.
More Major League Baseball key players are expected to join the tournament to help their teams read the playoffs. This list includes Vladimir Guerrrero Jr (Toronto Blue Jays) and Juan Soto (San Diego Padres).
