By the third quarter of 2022, some 4.6 million people were working in the Dominican Republic. This number covers both the formal and informal sectors. Data from the Social Security Administration (TSS) indicates over 2.2 million persons were paying into the system.
Regarding just who is paying into the system, it was reported that 54% of the workers were men. But, even more interesting is the fact that women are earning, in general, more than men by a small margin: RD$30,500 vs. RD$29,800).
The Social Security people report highlights that over 75% of all payments into the system come from just three places: the National District, the province of Santo Domingo, and Santiago de los Caballeros, the three largest urban areas in the country.
The data indicates that the government is the country’s largest employer, with over 720,000 persons contributing to the system.
