Renewables produce as much electricity as oil

It is expected that this year wind and photovoltaic energy generation will surpass the petroleum-based supplies of energy. And by 2024, over 1.3 gigawatts are expected to be solar-produced.

The Dominican Electricity Industry Association (ADIE) reports that current installations produce as much energy as petroleum-fueled generators.

The breakdown is natural gas and coal produce 69% of our energy; petroleum derivatives produce 15%, and hydro, biomass, wind and solar, another 15%.

There are over 800 non-conventional energy producers in the country, mostly wind and solar.

Also coming soon are such projects as the dam at Monte Grande and the generation facility at Manzanillo, which is expected to produce about 800MW for the national system and which is to b duplicated by 2024.

How big is the change? Back in 2000, petroleum derivatives provided 88% of the nation’s electricity, so we are talking about a 73% drop over the past two decades.
