There was concern the legislators would take advantage of the Christmas holidays to expeditely pass the Public Trusts Bill with doubtful clauses taking advantage that citizens were in party mode.
The controversial public trust bill did pass in the Senate and then moved to the Chamber of Deputies. So far, the debates continue to be intense inside and outside of Congress. The media is covering the pros and cons of the bill that many say would privatize state property, while keeping public the debt incurred during the operations.
Speaking up in favor of the bill’s passing are the president of the Chamber of Deputies Alfredo Pacheco and the spokesman for the ruling Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM) in the Chamber of Deputies, Julito Furcal. Homero Figueroa, spokesman for the President Luis Abinader, gave the government overview on why the bill should pass. Minister of the Presidency Joel Santos sees the bill as a key instrument for development. His predecessor, Lisandro Macarrulla has come forward defending the public trusts. Under his mandate, the trusts were applied to the bus corridors.
Among those spreading doubt the bill as approved in the Senate would be in the collective interest are Jose Dantés, legal advisor to the opposition Dominican Liberation Party in the Chamber of Deputies.
The Chamber of Deputies ordinary session closes on Thursday, 12 January 2023. The President could convene an extraordinary session to give more time to review the bill.
Likewise, the Chamber of Deputies is also reviewing amendments to the Electoral Regime Law and the Political Parties Law, with hardly enough time to pass the amendments received from the Senate.
