Metro director announces 20% wage increase for Metro conductors

Rafael Santos Pérez, director of the Santo Domingo Metro Office (Opret), says that a 20% wage increase is approved for Metro employees this year. The wage increase will be effective in March 2023. Several Metro car conductors are threatening to strike on 17 January 2023, demanding wage improvements and benefits, such as more lunchtime and a better cafeteria service. The Metro employees also seek severance payments.

Regarding severance payment benefits, Santos Perez says the Civil Service Law 41-08 establishes in its article 24 that “all technical personnel (occupational group III) in the public sector will only receive at the time of their dismissal from the institution the payment of acquired rights,” that is to say, vacation salary and salary number 13.

The Metro transports around 300,000 users every day on the Metro-Skylift Integrated Transport System in Greater Santo Domingo.
