
The Ministry of Public Health during the routine Wednesday health press conference says it has 17 confirmed cases of cholera, concentrated in the National District. The first cases of cholera were reported in Haitian nationals that had recently entered the country. In Haiti, there is a significant outbreak of cholera, worsened by the multidimensional crisis in that neighboring country.
The Ministry of Public Health said that the four most recent detected cholera cases include two asymptomatic persons. Two other patients were admitted to the Felix Maria Goico Public Hospital in Villa Consuelo in the National District.
During the press conference on 11 January 2023, Dr. Gina Estrella, director of Risk Management and Disaster Attention of the Ministry of Public Health, said that of 68 persons suspect of having cholera, only four positives have been confirmed.
She indicated that of the 17 confirmed cholera cases, four are imported, two of them correspond to a 93-year-old female and a 4-year-old male (both of Haitian nationality), residents of the San Carlos sector.
Health authorities reiterated that constant hand washing, cooking food well and not using contaminated water are crucial to avoid the spread of cholera.
