The Dominican government is purchasing 10 new three-car trains for its Santo Domingo Metro System. Line 1, from the area of Villa Mella to the Feria down by the sea, has 15 stations and runs for 14.5 kilometers. It is the most heavily used mass transit system in Santo Domingo. Overall, the metro carries an estimated of 300,000 passengers per day.
The new train cars have improved lighting and passenger information systems. The new cars are intended to provide better service to passengers at the peak hours when there are long lines with people waiting to board the service.
All of the units now operating on the different Santo Domingo Metro lines (64 in all) have been manufactured by Alstom Spain at their facility in Barcelona. Alstom is one of the major providers for mass transit equipment worldwide, and their Barcelona factory is one of the most modern.
