Public Works Ministry to deliver two projects in Santiago

The Ministry of Public Works reports that two major projects currently underway in Santiago province, the Duarte Highway expansion and renovations, and the repairs to the Las Carreras Avenue, will be delivered in the first half of 2023.

The expansion and improvements to the Duarte Highway are costing around RD$2 billion and extend from Santiago’s Cibao International Airport to the Monument to the Heroes of the Restoration in the center of the city. While “only” about eight kilometers long, the stretch is certainly one of the most heavily traveled on the highway. The improvements will enhance traffic flows to and from the airport. As part of the project, new access roads are built for those traveling to and from the northwest provinces — Montecristi, Valverde, Santiago Rodríguez and Dajabón. Likewise, the road is being improved for those headed to the North Coast by the Santiago Beltway North.

The Ministry of Public Works also said the wall that collapsed near the heart of the old city center on Las Carreras Avenue will be completed this year. The repairs are said to cost about RD$700 million.

The Ministry spokesperson showed reporters the advances on the Santiago Mass Transit project, which involves a tramway and cable cars. There are also improvements in the water purification plants covering around 70% of the potable water supply in the Santiago area.
