Senator warns Energy and Mines seeks to favor Karpowership company

PLD senator Yván Lorenzo warned that the Ministry of Energy and Mines has issued a resolution that obliges the country to pay the Karpowership company for energy that is not generated.

Lorenzo said that Minister of Energy and Mines, Antonio Almonte and the Superintendent of Electricity (SIE) Andres Astacio, were summoned by the Senate Energy Committee to answer for the process of awarding a contract for the generation of 178 Mega Watts to the company Karpowership Dominican Republic, SAS, through the international public bidding for new generation of up to 800 Mega Watts (MW).

Lorenzo said the Ministry of Energy and Mines seeks to favor Karpowership even when violations to articles 9.8.1 and 10.1.2 occurred during the bidding process.

The congressman explains that if Karpowership is interconnected to the National Electric System and is available, but the energy is not dispatched due to congestion of the electric system, even though it does not generate electricity, the power distribution companies would be obliged to pay US$40,552 per mega watts (MW) per month, for the 103 MW barge and likewise pay US$45,999 per mega watts for the 75 MW barge.

The Energy and Mines Minister Almonte has not been available to answer media questions regarding the the claims made by senator Yvan Lorenzo.
