The executive director of the watchdog civic organization, Citizen Participation, Fatima Lorenzo calls for Congress to approve the amendments to the electoral law reform and criticized the Dominican Liberation Party (PLD) for wanting to torpedo its approval in the Chamber of Deputies.
Lorenzo lamented that the ruling Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM) legislators are not taking advantage of their majority to approve the needed changes to Electoral Regime Law 15-19. She says that if the bill is not approved before 27 February 2023, the Central Electoral Board (JCE) will not have time to apply the amendments. She warned this would cause problems similar to those that had to be dealt with in the 2020 general elections.
The JCE and the Social and Economic Council (CES) have presented bills but the Senate has done differently and passed amendments that are now controversial. Lawyer Angel Lockward writes in Listin Diario that what was approved by the Senate is worse than what there already was.
The bill with amendments has passed to the Chamber of Deputies for review and passing or return to the senators.
