Painter Rosa Tavarez passes away

One of the most outstanding Dominican painters of all times, Rosa Tavarez passed away on Sunday, 5 February 2023 in Santo Domingo. She was 83 years old. She is a winner of the National Visual Arts Award and dozens of other national and international awards.

“I feel privileged to have been a student of hers, and to have benefited from that wealth of knowledge that has influenced my art,” José Sejo, president of the Dominican College of Plastic Artists (Codap), told Diario Libre.

He recognized Tavarez’s contributions to engraving and painting, and her dedication to teaching at the National School of Visual Arts (ENAV), after returning from her advanced studies in specialized workshops in New York. He also spoke of Tavarez’s efforts to defend the rights of the guild of plastic artists.

“As president of the Dominican College of Plastic Artists (Codap), she bravely defended the rights and conquests of the artists of the guild and its international affiliation to the Association Internationale des Arts Plastiques,” he told Diario Libre.

Gamal Michelén, deputy minister of Monumental Heritage of the Ministry of Culture, said: “Her work is powerful with expressionist traits characterized by deforming the figure according to the artist’s inner torment. It is a strong work that captures you from the moment you see it. She received transcendental awards in various biennials around the world, not only in ours, where she was recognized in 2017 with the National Visual Arts Award.”

He said Rosa Tavárez had a prodigal career in various art disciplines, standing out in painting, engraving, in non-traditional manifestations, and installations.

Culture Minister Milagros German also had lavish praise for the artist. “The country loses a great artist and master of Dominican plastic arts, Rosa Tavárez,” said German on Twitter.
