The Dominican Telecommunications Institute (Indotel), the City Council of the National District and telecom service providers announced last week meetings to coordinate joint actions to remove aerial cables that are not in use.
An Indotel press release explains that this project seeks to reduce visual pollution due to the proliferation of disused aerial wiring of telecommunications services in the central area of the National District. The intervention would start with an area of 4.34 square kilometers in its first phase, comprised between John F Kennedy, Winston Churchill, 27 de Febrero and Ortega y Gasset avenues.
For years telecom companies have been adding new connections without removing the old.
Nelson Arroyo, president of the board of directors of Indotel, said that the initiative would help to better appreciate the beauty of the city of Santo Domingo for residents and tourists who visit it. He emphasized, though, that this action is necessary not only to reduce visual pollution but also for the safety of passers-by.
The executive director of Indotel, Julissa Cruz, reiterated the call to the parties involved to define work committees to get the job done.
National District Mayor Carolina Mejía praised the fact that the telecommunications companies have responded to the call for the start of action and expressed the commitment of the entities involved to work together to find a solution to the serious problem.
The authorities agreed to meet again and to integrate Empresa Distribuidora de Electricidad del Sur (Edesur) and other utility companies.
The service providers have already launched a pilot plan in the Seralles sector of the National District as a model to be extended to other parts of the city.
