More than 200 tons of refuse removed from historic canal

The Monsieur Bogaert Canal is one of the first major irrigations canals to be built in the Dominican Republic. It dates back to the 1920s and is a major contributor to the water supply of at least six communities in the central province of Santiago. It also channels water to irrigate thousands of hectares of agriculture planted with rice, plantains and bananas, among other crops.

The major cleanup of just one section of the canal, located in La Otra Banda in Santiago, recently produced 200 tons of refuse. The trash was mainly plastic containers.

The work, headed by the National Institute for Hydraulic resources (INDRHI), was done to improve the quality of the water that flows downstream and is also used for human consumption in many places.

In the cleanup, even the regional office of the Ministry of Public Health was involved as a preventive measure against a possible cholera outbreak.
