The Ministry of Tourism (MITUR) announced conversations are advanced for the converting of the former Hotel Hispaniola on Av. Independencia into a convention center.
President Luis Abinader had announced the construction of the convention center during his participation in Fitur 2022 in Madrid. At the time, President Abinader said the state-owned Banco de Reservas would fund the construction. The operator will be IFEMA, the Spanish company that operates Fitur in Spain.
Tourism Minister David Collado says construction is to start in the next 90 days. He said the design contemplates preserving the hotel from the 50s. The hotel opened as Hotel Paz in 1955.
The Ministry of Tourism says this will increase hotel occupancy in the city, creating jobs, and multiple opportunities for city businesses.
“Cities that have well-managed convention centers increase hotel occupancy by 7-8%, which means more jobs, more opportunities and more entrepreneurship in the city of Santo Domingo,” he said.
