Former President Hipolito Mejía celebrated his 82 years on Wednesday, 22 February 2023. He is in seemingly good health and very active in politics and Dominican matters.
Mejía was President of the Republic from 16 August 2000 to 16 August 2004. He ran for reelection on the Dominican Revolutionary Party ticket but lost to former President Danilo Medina of the Dominican Liberation Party (PLD).
Mejía disputed the Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM) presidential candidacy, losing in the primaries to today President Luis Abinader.
Abinader named several of Mejía’s followers to key positions in his administration. Mejía’s long-time close military aide and security chief Carlos Luciano Diaz Morfa was named Minister of Defense in August 2020. Diaz Morfa was commander of the Army during the Mejia administration. He was promoted in the Army to the rank of Lieutenant General on 16 August 2020 when appointed Minister of Defense.
