Police officer accused of killing child in Santiago sentenced to six months in custody

The Permanent Arrest Office imposed six months of preventive detention to 30-year old Police corporal Alejandro Castro Cruz, accused of involuntary killing of 11-year old Donaly Martinez in Santiago. Castro Cruz was ordered to serve six months of preventive detention at the Military Special Operations headquarters in Manoguayabo.

The Public Ministry accuses Castro Cruz of violating articles 186, 295, 186, 304 and 309 of the Dominican Penal Code, that establish sanctions against abuse of authority against individuals, blows and wounds, as well as voluntary homicide.

Donaly Martinez was hit by a shot fired by police officer Alejandro Castro, when the later entered into an argument with the boy’s father, Anthony Martinez, who allegedly refused to lower the volume of the music blasted during the celebration of the carnival. The Sunday carnival parade would be suspended because of the death.
