Stats on Dominicans abroad updated; almost 3 million Dominicans are legal residents abroad

Foreign Relations Minister Roberto Alvarez and Deputy Minister for Foreign Relations, Carlos de la Mota (in charge of Dominicans living abroad matters) released the 2nd Sociodemographic Registry of Dominicans Residing Abroad with data on Dominicans living abroad. The 2,835,593 for 2022 is up from 2,531,618 registered for the first report in 2021. 90% of migrants live in the Americas.

“Thanks to this initiative for the collection and analysis of statistical data that we have been promoting since 2021, we have been able to design and implement actions and projects with greater and better focus, greater impact and, most especially, broad scope,” said Foreign Relations Minister Alvarez.

This initiative has been carried out by the research and study unit of the Vice Ministry for Dominican Communities Abroad of the Ministry of Foreign Relations.

Overall, De la Mota said there has been an increase of 300,000 more Dominicans living abroad or 12% more than those reported in the first report.

The report shows increases in the population migrating to Spain, Netherlands, Germany, but declines in citizens living legally in Puerto Rico, Italy, Canada, Chile, Aruba, Argentina, France, the United Kingdom and Switzerland.

The data for both the first and second reports show that more Dominican women have migrated than men. For the 2022 report, 53.8% of the Dominicans living legally abroad are women. This compares to the breakdown of 54.2% women and 45.8% men in 2021.

The data does not include Dominicans living broad without legal status or the hundreds of thousands of offspring of Dominicans that have yet to undergo the nationalization procedures.
