Carnival troubles continue

The 2023 Carnival season began the first Sunday in February, but in Santiago it came to a screeching halt on its second Sunday after a very confusing incident took the live of an 11-year old boy. Santiago’s carnival committee suspended until further notice all Carnival activities.

Then, last week, in La Vega, a member of one of the carnival groups known as “comparsas” stabbed a man after a serious altercation that has not been clearly described. As a result, the La Vega Carnival Union (UCAVE) suspended that carnival group from all carnival activities for the next 10 years.

There is one woman in particular who has been accused and is under indictment for attempted homicide. She was banned from partaking in any carnival-related activities.

In Santo Domingo, the carnival continues and the big parade of all the carnival groups is still on the schedule for next Sunday, 5 March 2023.
