Military arrested in the Operacion Frontera crackdown by public prosecutors to a would-be network of people smugglers on the border with Haiti say they are innocent of the charges. For the first time, public prosecutors have given details on what happens on the border as Haitians pay to cross and reach cities for health care and to get to their jobs on this side of the border. For years, city mayors on the border and border province legislators have been warning of the complicity of the military with the smuggling of undocumented Haitians.
Deputy José Horacio Rodríguez (Opción Democrática) said on Thursday, 23 February 2023, that the Border Operation undertaken by the Public Prosecutor’s Office is a correct step to combat what he called the migratory disorder prevailing in the country. He said the military, business people and corrupt politicians benefit at the expense of national sovereignty.
